When to worry about hemorrhoid bleeding

When Should You Worry About Hemorrhoid Bleeding?

A little blood from hemorrhoids is common and usually harmless, but it is important to know which bleeding is routine and which deserves attention. Here is how to tell the difference.

Usually Not a Cause for Alarm

Small amounts of bright red blood on toilet paper, on the stool, or in the bowl after a bowel movement are typical of hemorrhoids. This often follows a hard stool or straining and tends to stop on its own.

When to Worry

  • Heavy bleeding or blood that will not stop
  • Dark red, maroon, or black blood, or clots
  • Dizziness, weakness, or a racing heart
  • A change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing belly pain

These can point to causes other than hemorrhoids and need prompt evaluation. Never assume all rectal bleeding is from hemorrhoids.

When to See a Doctor

Have any new or persistent rectal bleeding checked, and seek urgent care for heavy bleeding or the warning signs above.
