Hemorrhoid banding is one of the most common in-office treatments for internal hemorrhoids, and a top concern is whether it hurts. For most people, the procedure itself is quick and surprisingly tolerable. Here is what to expect.
During the Procedure
The doctor places a small rubber band at the base of the internal hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. Because internal hemorrhoids have few pain-sensing nerves, most people feel only mild pressure or a slight pinch, not sharp pain. It takes just a few minutes.
Afterward
A dull ache, pressure, or feeling of fullness for 24 to 72 hours is normal. The banded hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within about a week, often without you noticing.
Staying Comfortable
- Use acetaminophen for discomfort (ask before using NSAIDs early on)
- Take warm sitz baths
- Keep stools soft with fiber and water
- Avoid heavy lifting for a few days
