A small amount of bright red blood after a bowel movement is common with hemorrhoids and typically stops on its own. It often looks worse than it is because blood spreads in toilet water.
Signs Bleeding May Be Dangerous
- Heavy or continuous bleeding that does not stop
- Dizziness, fatigue, paleness, or a rapid heartbeat (possible anemia)
- Dark, maroon, or black blood, or visible clots
- Bleeding with abdominal pain, weight loss, or a change in bowel habits
These signs can indicate a more serious problem and should not be ignored or assumed to be hemorrhoids.
