Hemorrhoids cause plenty of discomfort, but leg pain is not a typical symptom. If your hemorrhoids and aching legs showed up around the same time, there is usually a separate explanation. Here is how to think about it and when to take leg pain seriously.
Do Hemorrhoids Cause Leg Pain?
Not directly. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectal area and do not have nerves that send pain down the legs. When the two overlap, it is often because of a shared cause, like prolonged sitting, pregnancy, or pressure in the pelvis that affects both areas.
Possible Reasons for Pain in Both Places
- Prolonged sitting. Long hours seated strain rectal veins and stiffen the legs.
- Pregnancy. Pelvic pressure can trigger hemorrhoids and leg aches together.
- A thrombosed hemorrhoid. A painful clot in a hemorrhoid is intense but stays local, not in the leg.
When Leg Pain Is a Warning Sign
Leg pain with swelling, warmth, or redness in one leg can signal a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), which is a medical emergency. Do not assume it is related to hemorrhoids. Seek care right away.
When to See a Doctor
Get evaluated for new or worsening leg pain, and report rectal bleeding or severe hemorrhoid pain to your provider.
