Will Ice Help Reduce Hemorrhoids? Using Cold Therapy
Share
Ice is a simple, free remedy that can take the edge off a hemorrhoid flare. Cold therapy will not cure hemorrhoids, but it does ease two of the worst symptoms quickly. Here is how to use it well.
How Cold Helps
Applying cold constricts blood vessels, which reduces swelling, and it numbs the area to dull pain and itching. It is especially helpful for a swollen, painful external hemorrhoid.
How to Apply Ice Safely
- Wrap ice or a cold pack in a thin cloth, never apply it directly to skin
- Limit each session to about 15 minutes
- Wait at least 20 minutes before reapplying
- Alternate with warm sitz baths for added relief
Know the Limits
Cold therapy manages symptoms but does not address the cause. Pair it with soft stools from fiber and water so the hemorrhoid can actually heal.
When to See a Doctor
See a provider for severe pain, heavy bleeding, or symptoms that do not improve.
